Hey everyone, there’s been some questions lately about how I calculate the lunar day and how you might be on a different lunar day than I am.

First, my methodology is based on a magical day, which starts at dawn and runs through just before the following dawn. And the way I usually calculate day one of the lunar cycle is based on what magical day the moment of the new moon is in. So if the moon is new at 10 am (PST), I call that lunar day one… even though it’s still technically waning at dawn. This works for me because I have a long history of marking new and full moons as more of a phase and less a moment in time.

That said, if the moon is new at like 4am before sunrise, I will sometimes push it to the next day rather than the previous because that just makes sense.

What this means is that if you are in the future from me (as most people are) especially in Europe or Asia you may have to adjust for your local time. Note that holidays and Saints days are based on the calendar date and won’t change. But the lunar day might slip a day. If it does you will have to do some interpretation on how to use the lunar day purpose with the other astrological indicators (which usually won’t shift). If you have question on a specific working, just ask. I’m happy to provide alternate interpretations.

There’s no one correct way to do this and it’s a bit of art (or maybe arte) as well as science.
